Don Van der Wiel

Managing Director, Restructuring

Don Van der Wiel is a Managing Director at G2 Capital Advisors specializing in operational and financial restructurings with an emphasis on bankruptcy advisory and Chief Restructuring Officer engagements. He brings over 30 years of experience guiding complex turnarounds, mergers and acquisitions, carve-outs and divestitures, public offerings, debt refinancings, and bankruptcy processes. A results-oriented executive with a proven record of stabilizing businesses, improving operations, and increasing stakeholder value, Don has served in C-level roles across a wide range of industries including retail, restaurants, e-commerce, logistics, software, offshore sourcing, and business services.

Since joining G2 in 2018, Don has principally served in interim management roles as President, CFO, and CRO, providing strategic, financial, and operational leadership to companies navigating distressed situations. His mandates frequently involve multi-phase engagements spanning liquidity management, operational restructuring, recapitalizations, and sale processes. Highlights include leading companies through Chapter 11 reorganizations and Section 363 sales, spearheading carve-outs and refinancings under tight timelines, and stabilizing businesses during lender forbearance events. Don’s work has preserved jobs, restored profitability, and delivered value-maximizing outcomes for stakeholders across the middle market.

Earlier in his career, Don served as Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and co-investor in a private-equity backed, omni-channel school uniform retailer serving more than 1,500 schools across the southern United States. He also played pivotal leadership roles as CFO of Fifth Gear, where he helped more than double revenues and triple shareholder value prior to its strategic sale to a public company, and at hhgregg, where he led a successful IPO as the company doubled in size and profitability. Don also held senior finance roles with Buffets Holdings, Things Remembered, Carter’s Childrenswear, and Sears, Roebuck and Co., and began his career at Deloitte & Touche, where he earned his CPA license.

Don holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Northwestern University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. He and his wife live near Atlanta, Georgia, where he enjoys golf, pickleball and boating.
